The UK is home to hundreds of live music venues. London alone has over 100. The music scene was always an important part of modern English culture. But, in recent years, due to difficult economic times and a shift in interests, some famous and long standing music halls have closed or faced the threat of closing down.
An example of this is the 100 Club, in London’s famous Oxford Street. The venue, famous for helping to launch the Sex Pistols, faced closure not too long ago mostly due to high rent and low revenue. But, thanks to a recent sponsorship deal with Converse, the legendary venue will go on to exist for many years to come.
One of England’s most cherished concert halls is the Royal Albert Hall in the South Kensington area of London. The hall has been around since 1871, it was initiated by Prince Albert and completed by his wife, Queen Victoria. Inscribed upon the building is a historical note with Biblical quotations:
“This hall was erected for the advancement of the arts and sciences and works of industry of all nations in fulfilment of the intention of Albert Prince Consort… The wise and their works are in the hand of God…”
World renowned celebrities from different types of performing genres have performed on the stages of this legendary hall. Each year, the Royal Albert Hall is host to over 350 acts of a variety of performances, catering to every interest. Aside from musical concerts, the hall also presents ballet and opera, tennis, award ceremonies, school and social events, charity events and fancy banquets.
The dome structured O2 Arena is also a popular London multi-purpose hall, although much newer than the Royal Albert Hall. It opened in 2007 and has a capacity of up to 23,000. Although it is relatively new, it is considered to be one of the most popular event venues. In 2007 it sold 1.2 million tickets, making it the world’s third most popular venue for concerts and family events. This venue is equipped to host musical, sports, a variety of entertainment, church and awards events. The hall also boasts the largest indoor screen in the UK, measuring at 34.5 meters by 12 meters and has been used for an entrepreneurs event in the past, as well.
